Lan Ha Bay: The Quieter Side of Ha Long

Lan Ha Bay is the southern end of the same limestone seascape as Ha Long Bay, wrapped around Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, and you reach it either on an overnight cruise from Hanoi or by bus and ferry to Cat Ba. The scenery is the same as Ha Long’s; what differs is far fewer boats and more than a hundred small beaches you can actually land on.

The bay covers about 7,000 hectares and some 400 islands. There is no line in the water between Lan Ha and Ha Long, and in 2023 UNESCO extended the Ha Long Bay listing to take in the Cat Ba archipelago, which is the clearest official statement that this is one landscape.

Where is Lan Ha Bay?

Lan Ha lies south and east of Cat Ba Island, the largest island in the bay system, at the southern edge of what most people call Ha Long Bay. Administratively it belongs to Hai Phong, not Quang Ninh, which is why it is sometimes described as a separate destination.

In practice, most overnight ships board at Tuan Chau near Ha Long City, sail south through Ha Long Bay and cross into Lan Ha for the night. Day boats work the other way round: they leave from Cat Ba and stay in Lan Ha all day.

Halong Bay vs Lan Ha Bay: which is better?

For scenery, neither. Put photographs of the two side by side and they are hard to tell apart, because geologically they are one bay. What changes is what is floating in them, and what you can do once you stop.

Ha Long Bay Lan Ha Bay
Boat traffic Heavy on the main routes, especially 11am to 4pm Fewer, smaller boats spread over more water
Beaches Very few; islands drop into deep water More than a hundred small coves
Big caves Sung Sot, Thien Cung, Dau Go Smaller caves, such as the Dark and Bright Cave
Day trip From Hanoi, long road and busy water From Cat Ba, short boat ride, quieter water
Base on land Ha Long City Cat Ba Town, with a national park behind it

Choose Ha Long if you specifically want the famous caves and the widest choice of ships. Choose Lan Ha if what you are picturing is empty water, karst towers and a swim off a beach with nobody else on it. Our Halong Bay cruise guide covers the ships that stay on the Ha Long side.

How to get to Lan Ha Bay from Hanoi

There are two routes, and they suit different trips.

On an overnight cruise. You arrange almost nothing. A shuttle collects you in Hanoi’s Old Quarter and drives about 2.5 hours to Tuan Chau near Ha Long City, and the itinerary sails through Ha Long Bay before crossing into Lan Ha, so you see both bays on one trip. On the Lan Ha ships we list the shuttle is not part of the fare, but it can be added when you book.

Independently, via Cat Ba. Take a bus from Hanoi to Hai Phong, about 2 hours, then the ferry across to Cat Ba, about an hour. Combined bus and ferry tickets save you sorting out the crossing yourself. Once on Cat Ba, book a day boat the evening before and you can be on the water by 8am.

A day boat from Cat Ba usually includes lunch, kayaking and a swim stop. What does not work is a single day trip from Hanoi, where most of what you pay for is six hours in a minibus.

Lan Ha Bay cruise: what the overnight ships do

The one-night timetable is close to identical on every ship, because the port sets it. Board at Tuan Chau around midday, lunch as the ship sails south, one stop in the afternoon, dinner at anchor, one stop the next morning, and back on the pier before noon.

The stops are what make it Lan Ha. Kayaking at Ao Ech, a lagoon closed in by limestone cliffs, is a common afternoon. So is a swim at the Ba Trai Dao islets, or a bamboo rowing boat into the Dark and Bright Cave in the morning. On two nights, most ships add a middle day at Viet Hai, a village inside Cat Ba National Park reached by boat and then by bicycle or electric cart.

One warning applies to every listing here: Lan Ha and Ha Long are sold interchangeably, and many boats advertised for Lan Ha spend most of the sailing on the Ha Long side. Read the hour by hour itinerary, not the title. Each ship below names Lan Ha in its own route.

When to visit Lan Ha Bay

October to December is the best window across the whole bay system: dry, clear and mild, the season the water looks bluest. March and April are warm but often hazy, and January and February are cool and grey, with a fine mist over the far islands.

May to September brings heat, humidity and afternoon storms, and it is typhoon season. The port authority suspends sailings on the Lan Ha side exactly as it does on the Ha Long side, sometimes at a few hours’ notice. Keep a spare day around a cruise in those months.

Is Cat Ba worth staying on?

Yes. Treating it as a ferry stop is the most common way people shortchange this trip. Cat Ba has a national park with walking trails, limestone climbing routes that bring climbers here on purpose, cheap food and motorbikes to rent. Two nights on the island, with one day on a boat in Lan Ha, is a good alternative to a cruise if you prefer a bed on land.

Rooms are also cheaper than in Ha Long City, which matters if you are building the trip around the bay rather than passing through it. To slot Cat Ba into a longer route north to south, our Vietnam tours and itineraries guide shows where the bay fits, and the Southeast Asia travel guide links every country we cover.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lan Ha Bay the same as Halong Bay?

It is the same landscape but not the same water. Lan Ha is the southern part of the bay system around Cat Ba Island, in Hai Phong, while Ha Long Bay proper lies to the north in Quang Ninh. Most overnight cruises sail through both, which is why they are so often confused.

How far is Lan Ha Bay from Hanoi?

Allow about three hours either way. An overnight cruise drives about 2.5 hours to the Ha Long terminals and then sails south into Lan Ha. Independently, the bus to Hai Phong takes about 2 hours and the ferry to Cat Ba about another hour, plus connections.

Is Lan Ha Bay worth visiting?

Yes, especially if crowds put you off Ha Long. You get the same karst scenery with fewer boats, small beaches to swim from, and Cat Ba as a base with its own national park. If you want the biggest caves and the most choice of ships, Ha Long proper still has the edge.

Is a two-night Lan Ha Bay cruise worth it?

If you want time on the water, yes. One night is mostly boarding, one afternoon, dinner and the trip back. The second night buys a full middle day, usually Viet Hai village and a quieter beach, when the boats go further from the main anchorages.

Choose your month first, then decide between a cruise from Hanoi and two nights on Cat Ba.
