Labuan Bajo: Planning Your Komodo Trip

Labuan Bajo is a harbour town on the western tip of Flores and the gateway to Komodo National Park. Plan on three or four days: one to arrive, then a liveaboard of three days and two nights, or a one-day speedboat trip if time is short. The flight from Bali takes about an hour and a quarter.

Almost everything you do here happens on a boat. The park’s highlights are spread across Padar, Komodo and Rinca islands and the reefs between them, so day trips and liveaboards, not land tours, are what people book. The town itself is walkable, and every boat leaves from the same harbour area.

Is Labuan Bajo in Flores, and how far is it from Bali?

Yes. Labuan Bajo sits at the western end of Flores, in East Nusa Tenggara, facing the islands of Komodo National Park across a short stretch of sea. Bali is the main gateway, with four to six flights a day to Komodo Airport (LBJ) and a flight time of about an hour and a quarter. Jakarta is direct in roughly two and a half hours.

Does Labuan Bajo have Grab?

Grab and Gojek both work in Labuan Bajo, but for motorbike rides only, with no car option. App riders cannot pick you up inside the airport, so walk out to the road. The airport is two to four kilometres from town, a short and cheap ride. Most boat trips include a hotel pickup anyway.

Komodo island tour from Labuan Bajo: day trip or liveaboard?

There are three ways to see the park, and the right one depends on time and budget.

Shared speedboat day trip Shared liveaboard, 3 days 2 nights Private charter
Time on the water About 06:00 to 16:30, with hotel pickup Two nights at anchor Usually three nights or more, up to about nine days
Padar A morning climb Usually at sunrise or sunset Planned with your group
Pace Six stops, fast Relaxed, with snorkelling stops Whatever you choose
Sleeping Hotel in town Cabin on a wooden phinisi Whole boat for your group
Best for One free day Most first visits Families and groups of six or more

For most people the answer is a liveaboard of at least three days and two nights. It reaches Padar at a good hour, plus the dragons on Komodo or Rinca, Pink Beach, the Taka Makassar sandbar and Manta Point, without a 6am pickup, and all meals are on board. The one-day speedboat trip covers the same headline stops at speed and suits travellers with a single free day. For a group of six or more, chartering the whole boat often works out cheaper per head than booking cabins.

How many days in Labuan Bajo?

Three days on a liveaboard is the usual answer, plus a night in town at either end. One day covers Padar, a dragon walk, Pink Beach and Manta Point in a rush. Two days and one night adds a sunrise or sunset at Padar. Three days and two nights is the length most people are glad they chose, with time for the Kelor viewpoint, the flying foxes at Kalong and an extra reef or two.

Four days or more adds quieter sites in the north and south, and divers reach classics such as Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Manta Alley. Keep a buffer day before an onward flight: in 2026 the harbourmaster suspended sailing to Komodo and Padar in late May, July, August and September when the swell was up, with Rinca offered instead.

Komodo National Park tour: fees and rules for 2026

Park entry is charged per person per day, not per trip, so a three-day liveaboard pays it three times. Ranger fees are collected separately, in cash on the island. Almost no advertised boat fare includes either, and operators quote different figures because some fold the ranger and local charges into one number. Ask what is covered before you book, not at the jetty.

Since 1 April 2026 the park admits at most 1,000 visitors a day. Entry is booked online through the SiOra system at least a day ahead, and Padar runs three timed sessions. In peak season, turning up and paying on the day is no longer a reliable plan. Your boat operator normally handles the booking, but check that they have.

Boat safety varies. Tourist boat incidents here run to several a year, and one near Padar in December 2025 killed four people. Book a licensed operator, count the life jackets, and treat a captain who sails against a weather advisory as a reason to walk away.

When to visit Labuan Bajo

April to October is the dry season, with the calmest water and the best underwater visibility around September and October. December to March is wetter, February most of all, though rain tends to come in short bursts. Padar’s ridges are brown in the dry months and green in the wet, so the picture in your head may belong to the other season.

Mantas are at the cleaning stations all year. The big aggregations favour the wetter months, roughly December to April, while calm seas and clear water favour the dry season. No operator can promise a sighting.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in Labuan Bajo itself?

The town is mostly a base, but a pleasant one: harbour-front cafés, a sunset viewpoint over the bay and dive shops for a day of diving. Most visitors spend their land time on arrival and departure days. To build Komodo into a longer trip with Bali or Lombok, our Indonesia tours guide covers the routes that connect them.

How do I get from Labuan Bajo to Komodo Island?

Only by boat. Speedboats reach Komodo Island in a long day trip with several stops, and wooden phinisi liveaboards include it on most two and three night routes. Book a licensed tour boat rather than a ride with a fisherman, and note that when the harbourmaster stops boats sailing to Komodo, Rinca is the usual substitute, with dragons of its own.

Is a Komodo Island tour worth it?

Yes, if you give it at least three days. You can walk with a ranger past wild Komodo dragons, climb Padar, snorkel off Pink Beach and swim near mantas on one trip, without a diving licence. It is less worth it as a rushed same-day dash from Bali, or with no spare day in a windy month.

Can I dive on a Komodo liveaboard?

Yes. Some boats are built for divers and run three or more dives a day at sites such as Batu Bolong and Manta Alley. Most sightseeing phinisi offer snorkelling only, or diving at extra cost. For a dive-first trip in the other season, read our Raja Ampat liveaboard guide, the other great dive region in eastern Indonesia, and the wider Southeast Asia travel guide.
